Capital Campaign Transforms How Watkinsville First UMC
Conducts Ministry

/files/Images Folder/WatkinsvilleElevationSS.jpgIn 2009, with the help of the Georgia United Methodist Foundation, Watkinsville First UMC launched a $1.6 million capital campaign to build and furnish a Fellowship Center. When complete in spring 2011, the multi-purpose space will transform how this 700+ member church conducts ministry.

“The major benefit will be in the area of fellowship and youth ministry, but it will also benefit our work with homeless families,” said Dr. Beth LaRocca-Pitts, senior pastor of Watkinsville First.

Seating capacity for gatherings will triple from 100 to nearly 300 people. A larger, safer and more inviting space will enhance youth outreach efforts. The new multi-use space will be the perfect place to host Sunday school classes, Bible studies and community events where long-time residents can connect with new homeowners.

The facility, which will house a fellowship hall, kitchen, educational and family spaces and a youth social room, will positively impact its ministry with Interfaith Hospitality Network in Athens. Through this partnership, Watkinsville First provides emergency housing assistance to homeless families with children four times per year. In addition to housing, meals and transportation, guests will immediately benefit from the use of new shower facilities.
